This past week, we continued our journey south from Denali through Anchorage and followed the Seward and Sterling Highways into the Kenai Peninsula. Driving along these two highways offer non-stop, incredible panoramas of mountains and rivers. Both highways are mostly 2-lane asphalt highways with occasional gravel portions where the road has either been weather damaged or under repair.
Anchorage, Alaska
Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and historically was critical to Alaska’s railroad development to the interior. Today, 90% of merchandise goods for most of Alaska’s population comes through the port of Anchorage. As such, it is the headquarters for many state, national and international businesses and also has many museums, parks, points of interest and tourist attractions. For us, it was a stopping point to regroup on our way down to the Kenai Peninsula.
While in Anchorage, we had the unique opportunity to meet up with our former Katy, Texas neighbors, Curt and Melissa who are also spending the summer exploring Alaska in their RV. Like our caravan traveling companions, Tammy and Jeff, Curt and Melissa live in Denver and we were able to introduce them.
Kenai Peninsula – Homer Spit and Kenai
The Kenai Peninsula is the playground of south central Alaska and besides offering incomparable scenery you can go boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, camping and so much more.
Our first stop on the peninsula was Homer, the Halibut fishing capital of the world. People travel around the world to catch their limit and although we didn’t catch ours, we definitely consumed our fair share at the local eateries.
The campground was at the end of the Homer Spit and we thoroughly enjoyed the incredible view from the comfort of our Airstream:
We had 2 objectives for our visit to the peninsula – see some bears in the wild and catch some salmon for dinner. So, while in Seward, we ventured into the wilderness via a float plane to see if we could meet our objectives! And, boy did we! Hope you enjoy this slide show of bears, salmon, eagles and glaciers.
Watch Susan Catch the big one!!!
Join us for a ride in the Float Plane we took to into the wilderness!
